Teach Me Social Lather, Rinse, Repeat: Write the ultimate digital profile or mission statement for your business!Your hair is an accessory you wear every day… well, so is your online profile. Taking time to get your hair cut, washed and styled is part of how you present your physical self to the world – why not take the same approach with your digital self-image? Follow these 3 simple steps to build a coiffed digital biography for yourself or your business!

Step 1: LATHER

Write out a lengthy version of your mission statement and biography. Be repetitive, descriptive and wordy. Through this process, you will find that there are certain words you repeat and cling to as important keywords to focus in on. Grab a thesaurus and look for great sounding synonyms to help the brainstorming process! During this stage, don’t hesitate to do some research too; look through past statements you have written, browse your competitor’s websites and surround yourself by content, keywords, and creative juice!

Step 2: RINSE

Rinsing thoroughly is important! Many social media profiles only allow a “tweet” sized biography of 140 characters or less so you will need to be ruthless about sorting through all of your great ideas you just came up with! Start by identifying three or four keywords that stand out and start stringing them together into bite-sized portions. Leave room for your website at the end, so your bio should really only be about 100-110 characters, maybe 10-15 words at most – yes, that averages a lot of big words! Stay away from personal pronouns and helper verbs. Keep the longer adjectives and adverbs which ensure your pure mission comes across succinctly.

Step 3: REPEAT

When you think you’re done, you’re not! You have a working copy that you can use until you are ready to do the same thing all over again! Just like a haircut, you should revise your online biographies and profiles about every 6-8 weeks. Read it over every few weeks when you are online and see if it still embodies the message that you want it to. Pay attention to how it comes across when you say it out loud to prospective clients – do they respond positively or ask more questions? If you need to clarify it aloud, chances are you also need to clarify it online. So, lather up and start brainstorming!
